Your commentary on the tugboat skipper reminds me of an event in my life. A dear old friend and mentor, Earl Bonness of Grand Lake Stream, Maine, had been a river driver, tending logs for 39 days down the Machias River to the ocean in Washington County, Maine. In 1964, he and I took a canoe trip down the river, and we stopped where another river called the Mopang joined the Machias. “Let’s pull up here,” he said. “I want to show you something.” He pointed to a huge pine log that was lodged in a bar at the mouth of the Mopang. Earl said, “Val Moore and I tried to move that stick across that bar for most of a day in ’31. Couldn’t do it. Too shallow.” The log looked good as new.
